Loy Krathong Craftsmanship Awards: A Tradition Worth Plaquing 🌸

Loy Krathong krathong-making competitions are run by schools, temples, and municipalities across Thailand. Their awards rarely match the craftsmanship being celebrated. Three material upgrades fix that.

Wood and Brass, Not Plastic

If the contest celebrates handcraft, the trophy should be handcrafted too. Plastic certificates handed to first-place krathong makers communicate the opposite message. A simple walnut plaque with brass nameplate (about ฿380) matches the medium of the celebration — and lasts well past the festival.

Engrave the Specific Detail

'Best Krathong 2023' is fine. 'Best Krathong 2023 — banana-leaf weaving and marigold detail' is much better. Specific engraving honors the actual skill on display and gives the recipient a permanent record of what they made that night. Few extra characters, much more memorable plaque.
