Cast bronze trophies look more expensive than they cost because the process is genuinely artisanal. A tour of a working Thai foundry explains why lead times are honestly that long.
First, a wax replica of the trophy is carved or 3D-printed. Then a ceramic shell is built around it (8–10 dipping cycles, drying between). The wax is melted out, molten bronze is poured in at 1,150°C, the ceramic is broken away, and the raw casting is hand-finished. Total cycle: 12–18 days. There is no way to compress it without compromising quality.
Solid bronze has weight (about 8.7g/cm³ vs zinc's 7.1), develops a natural patina that improves with age, and rings differently when handled — recipients literally feel the difference. For a flagship perpetual trophy where unit cost is secondary to perceived gravitas, solid cast bronze beats plated zinc on every dimension except price.
